Looking for hints, spangrams and answers for Wednesday’s Strands? You can find them here:
Hey, people! It’s been a pretty quiet week on my end, but I’m gearing up for a few days packed with video game announcements at Summer Game Fest this weekend. It’s always fun to cover, even though it’s a lot of work. There aren’t many other things I’d rather be doing for a living.
Today’s NYT strands hints, spangram and answers are coming right away.
How to play Strands
The New York Times’ strands The puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s in beta right now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There is a new game strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight letter grid. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a topic word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects at least two sides of the board, but may not start or end there. While subject words will not be a proper noun, spangram can be a proper noun. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Each letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangrams. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it is possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touch screen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words with at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you will unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the topic words.
Warning: You will need to be on your feet. Sometimes you will need to fill in the missing words in a sentence. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will change from day to day and the puzzle makers will try to surprise you sometimes.

BEACH COMB
Here’s where you’ll find it online…
The rest of today strands The subject words are…
- STONES
- GLASS
- FOSSIL
- SHELL
- DRIFTWOOD
- SHIELD
Here’s what the completed network looks like…
I saw “gale” in the upper right, thinking it was related to tides. But it wasn’t a theme word, nor was it “tide”. Since I was two-thirds of the way to a clue at that point, I figured I could unlock another clue by finding the “miss” on the left rail. This clue gave me the cards for SHELL.
Then I realized I was missing the GLASS in the top right. STONI was right next to him at the top. The FOSSIL was in the gap between the stone and the shell. Then I saw BOTTLE at the end. DRIFTWOOD then left the winding pangram.
I used a hint and spangram was the last theme word I found.
That’s all there is for today strands data and response. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the walkthrough for Friday’s game if you need them.
